A Chara,
I hope you and your family have been keeping safe in these very uncertain times. I know nearly all of us have been impacted in some way by Covid-19 and it will continue to be a challenging period. Some of our players have returned to Ireland and I wish them all the best and I hope some of them might return if possible.
One thing that we’ve nearly always had in difficult times is our sport and in particular gaelic games. It has hard to believe that we have not been able to play for the last few months after a great start to the seasons with the 9s, 7s and first round of the league. Thankfully, in Australia things have started to turn a corner. It now looks like we will be able to get back playing the games we love this year. In Victoria, restrictions have started to be lifted and we can now gather in groups of 20 people outdoors.
However, with the current restrictions on contact sport and numbers, training and games can’t commence just yet. Gaelic Games Victoria have been and continue to monitor the latest advice from the Victorian Government. While we are not in a position to announce a return date yet we do believe it will be in the coming weeks. We are keen to commence as soon as contact sport is allowed again. We believe that clubs would benefit from at least 3 weeks of training before fixtures would commence.
Our committee will be arranging a meeting with players from each club in the coming days to discuss what our season will look like when we return. We are also hopeful that there will be opportunities to play in competitions in other states this year which would be a great boost to the playing community.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact myself or your club delegates who are listed below:
